AT CHATEAU MARMONT WITH CHRIS BLACK

An empty Chateau Marmont is both extraordinary and surreal.

The infamous hotel on Sunset Boulevard usually is quite a scene. The sun-soaked garden is bustling with producer types, wannabes, musicians, rich guys, scammers, actors, and tourists sipping on martinis and truffle fries.

On a recent stay, it was the total opposite. I parked my car in the garage myself, didn’t see another soul at the pool in the middle of the afternoon, sent emails from a deserted lobby, and had tacos from across the street because room service wasn’t offered. It felt like we had the place all to ourselves.
